Ballet Without Borders collaboration

How to support

Scroll down to find out more about Ballet without Borders and why we believe so much in this incredible non-profit organisation.

But first, here’s how you can support BWB:

1. Donations:

All customers have the option of rounding up their payment by $1-$2 to go straight to Ballet Without Borders. This can only be done by the direct bank transfer option at the moment (we’re working on adding a donation button to the website).

All you have to do is add your chosen donation to your final payment – we then put it aside to donate to Ballet Without Borders. Simple!

2. Secondhand dancewear sales – Marketplace

We’ve JUST launched a Marketplace section on our website. All dance parents will know from experience how much dancewear goes to waste as children grow and you don’t know what to do with the old leotards and activewear.

The answer is please donate to us and we will resell on our website. All profits from this will go to Ballet Without Borders, with a small percentage kept to cover administration. You get to know your old dancewear has gone to a good cause, customers get the opportunity to purchase discount dancewear that is still in great condition.

Ballet Without Borders

Ballet Without Borders’ vision is to break the real and perceived barriers of ballet accessibility in Australia. They believe that this powerful art form should be available for all children, regardless of their socio-economic status.

They work nationwide with schools, community and government organisations to provide children with a range of ballet education activities. These include working in public schools classes, after school care and holiday workshops in disadvantaged communities. They also offer a range of scholarships throughout the year.

They view ballet education as part of the bigger picture; a pathway to experiencing art and music as well as learning about discipline, hard work, dedication and teamwork – which are all vital life skills. But more importantly, they believe that every child should have the opportunity to try ballet, to experience variety in life, and to grow and learn regardless of their financial or social status. The mission is to bring ballet to all.

There is a t-shirt awareness campaign where you can also purchase a T-shirt from the Ballet Without Borders website and share on socials your ballet story to help raise awareness of the amazing work they do.

BWB x DMD collab

After discovering BWB on social media we were immediately so impressed with the philosophy and mission. It aligned so well with Dance Moves and we knew we had to reach out to see how we could support.

At Dance Moves we want to be able to share the love of dance and support anyone from any background to discover this incredible art as it has benefited our lives in so many ways.

Becci’s Ballet Story

Ballet has shaped my life from the moment I stepped into the studio when I was 2 years old. My mum was not a dancer but just looking for some activity for me to do, needless to say from that moment on, I was hooked. My parents were not prepared for the years to come full of dance training, concerts, exams and special events. I was lucky that my parents were happy and able to support my passion, but I know a lot of my friends were unable to pursue the activity due to the cost.

I was an only child and I thrived on being able to be around other kids during the day at school and then every night at dance. Ballet was my obsession, I had records (yes I’m that old) of the famous ballet’s music and play them for hours making up steps and dreaming to be on the stage. I found solace in having a safe place to go after school, particularly through a rough time at High School when I was being bullied. Knowing that I had another place to go where I was welcomed and had friends who loved dancing as much as I did, helped me through that difficult time.

Alas, I was not destined for the path of professional dance, but despite not becoming a dancer it still remained such a huge part of my life. From joining the Dance Club at University and teaching ballet to adults, through to continuing my training as an adult post University and when I moved to Australia. It remains by favourite form of exercise and movement and gave me so many lifelong skills that have helped me become the person I am today. I hope that giving my children the opportunity to dance will do the same for them.
